Chocolate Covered Adventures-Tyco's Search For The Ark Of The Covenant

Page turning adventure!
This was 63 pages of pure adventure. We thought we were geting a 30 page book and we were so delighted to see 63. The story was great and that monkey was his usual fun loving self. A great adventure and very informative at the same time. Our children didn't even realize that they were learning, while enjoying this book. Great pictures and the hieroglyphics table was a bit hit! We definitely recommend this one!

Egypt looks new through the eyes of a child!
How can we begin to explain how fascinated we were with this adventure. The Egyptian pyramids alone is worth the reading. But the extensive background research material that the authors included, and the hireoglyphic alphabet table and a decoder is beyond exceptional. The resources for further knowledge about this region of the world had me in awe, and I've ventured through the pyramids before. The story line was something right out of a movie. The ancient map, the missing treasure, the bad guys, the chase, all made for an exciting read. We truly enjoyed the illustrations, and phototgraphs. If you need an instant vacation, pick up a copy of this book. While it may be written for children by children, it is sophisticated story telling, that any age will enjoy and this was only volume 1. We can't wait for volume 2 and 3. A Great Read!

The Circle of Healing : Deepening Our Connections with Self, Others, and Nature
Published in Paperback by Talking Birds Press (01 July, 2000)
Authors: Cathy Holt and Catherine F. Holt
Average review score:

Excellent Book
The Circle of Healing is an inspiring book that encourages growth on many different levels. Breathing, communication, emotional growth, listening to your body's wisdom, and nature as teacher and healer, are some of the rich topics explored. This book is a combination of deep insights and practical exercises. Holt is a holistic health educator and environmental activist. In addition, she's an experienced biofeedback therapist who has helped clients recover from stress-related disorders and occupational injuries.

The section on body posture is filled with practical wisdom. Holt talks about a medical condition called "forward head syndrome" where the head is held too far forward. This causes pain in the neck and shoulders. Holt equates this posture with "leading with my head instead of my heart. I'm going too fast, trying to think my way out of everything, instead of being willing to feel." I highly recommend savoring the healing opportunities that come from reading this excellent book.

--Trina Swerdlow, author of Growing Free and The Heartfelt Guide to Emotional Intimacy Newsletter

Terrific Reference for Improving One's Life
This book is a terrific reference for those who are seeking healing and improvement in their lives.

Author Cathy Holt provides us with a kind of primer on becoming more grounded by sharing personal stories and by describing the teaching of many well-known spiritual practitioners such as Thich Nhat Hahn and Sun Bear, and the study of works by other medical and holistic experts.

With a reminder to us of the importance of our being connected to nature, Holt outlines the tools essential for finding peace through personal awareness. First, she underscores the importance of and how to go about healing oneself by making intentions, finding support and forming healing community. Then she describes the steps required for physical healing such as honoring, communicating with and relaxing the body, and breathing properly. She follows this with invaluable guidance on emotional healing including identifying and dealing with the "inner critic," cultivating gratitude, becoming less judgmental, being open to differing perspectives, and the importance of engaging in work which is truly satisfying.

Finally she tells us how to "complete the circle" by connecting most fully with natural guides invoking sacred space, getting beyond materialism, and identifying and fully connecting with our own best community.

All of these topics are discussed both technically-as based on the author's experience with medical practitioners and on her own work as a biofeedback therapist- and spiritually-as based on her research and experience with teaching and healing circles, personal vision quests, etc.

The book contains an impressive list of recommended readings, videos, and audiotapes, as well as contact information for self-help organizations.

I highly recommend that anyone looking to make changes in his/her life start with this book and use it as a reference before visiting the self-help or spirituality sections at the local bookstore.

An old friend
The Finding of Jasper Holt has been a favorite of mine for years. It is one of those books that have to be revisited over the years.

One of my all-time favorties.
This book has it all: romance, adventure, and excitement. I would heartily recommend it to anyone.

Goatsong: A Novel of Ancient Athens
Published in Hardcover by (October, 1991)
Author: Holt
Average review score:

This book is great fun!
Wow! I just finished reading The Walled Orchard series, and it was incredible! I don't think any other book has made me laugh this much before. Yet, this book is not all about jokes. Behind the jokes, I felt that there was a pretty strong message. Tom Holt is a genius of a writer. I can't wait to get more of his books. I think that anyone and everyone would love this book.

Goatsong: a shrewd historical primer on Athens' foibles
Well researched and screamingly funny, Goatsong parades a century of literary, political, and philosophical heroes before the unsympathetic gaze of a goatherd and finds them wanting. Eupolis of Pallene, an up and coming playwright, usually finds them wanting in courtesy, dignity, and heroics, but he manages to sketch such legends as Aristophanes, pericles, and Alcibiades so perversely that the reader transforms fundamental assumptions before realizing that the book in fiction, and comic fiction at that.

Eupolis descrbes and lampoons the institutions of chorus selection, legislative debate, and marriage with little historical and cultural relics which further deter one from suspending disbelief, but even he dows nto escape his own boil-lancing mirth. If one hasn't a sense of the absurdity of the Peloponnesian War-era Athens by the end of this book, at least a few thousand laughs will have elapsed in the process

Red hot read
A timely thriller that catches your interest and doen't let go until the last page. I particularly liked the Southern California venues. The characters are likable and "real" people whom you can root for. Great airplane read.

Killer thriller--you won't be able to put it down
Talk about a gripping thriller! I came across this gem as a recommendation from a friend, and now feel it's my duty to recommend it to others. If you are looking for a fiction thriller, well-written, with great depictions and a great story, then definitely read Greenheat Redheat. The story takes you from California to an island off the coast of Maine with character development, chases, escapes, and adventure. It's an educational experience as well, you will captivated by the intrigue of the bio-diesel industry, and the author explains it in a way that we can all understand. I give this a 5 star rate!

The Historical Atlas of World War I (A Henry Holt Reference Book)
Published in Hardcover by Henry Holt & Company, Inc. (July, 1994)
Authors: Anthony Livesey and H. P. Willmott
Average review score:

Well set out and concise
The version of this book that I have is called the 'The Viking Atlas of World War 1', but it appears to be the exact same book with the same author, published date and number of pages. What impresses me most about this book is the quality of the maps. There are more than 100 colour maps which trace the development of the major campaigns with unprecedented clarity. Along with the maps there are numerous photos and drawings which are all easily read and understood. The accompanying text is detailed but not overbearing. Overall this is a lovely reference of World War One which is very nicely balanced in its presentation. It also makes an informative accompaniment to the World War One grand strategic boardgame, 'Paths of Glory' by Ted S Racier of GMT games. This is a boardgame which those interested in reading this book may wish to explore. It is one of the best grand strategic boardgames available.

Superb
An excellent overview of the major battles of "the Great War." The maps are vivid, accurate and understandable. The accompanying text and photgraphs are also well done and compliment the maps. By far the best of the World War I atlases, and generally superior to even the West Point Atlas of American Wars, 1900-1918, which is also excellent.

Impact: fifty short short stories
excellent source of education for ESL students, very interesting and easy to read book!

A fabulous collection of short short stories for teachers
"Impact" is a book my school has used for nearly a decade as an introduction to the short story, literary issues, and writing projects. An excellent selection of 50 short-short stories, "Impact" follows up each story with a discussion of some appropriate literary term, a selection of questions that are actually worth answering (as a teacher, I know how bad these usually are), and some really innovative writing topics. The stories are all first-rate, from Shirley Jackson's "Charles" to Hemingway's "The Old Man at the Bridge" to Arthur C. Clarke's "Who's There?" Most of the stories also hinge on some ironic twist, allowing that most difficult and valuable of literary concepts to be taught thoroughly. Although a bit pricey for purchase just to read, "Impact" is also an excellent collection for anybody aspiring to write short stories. They simply don't get much better than these!

Jerusalem Walks (Henry Holt Walks Series)
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt (Paper) (February, 1992)
Author: Nitza Rosovsky
Average review score:

Forget the Other Guide Books
Jerusalem Walks is a fantastic book for those who are traveling to Jerusalem. Having lived and studied in Jerusalem myself, I am confident in saying that you will have a hard time finding a book that has this much information in a guide book format. The 6 walking tours offer something for everybody, and I can think of no more enjoyable way to get to know the city. The focus of the walks is of course the Old City, but she also offers a couple of walks in Western Jerusalem. I have taken tours all over Israel and Jerusalem, but I have not seen another source offer such a variety and depth of historical and fun information about the turbulent history of Jerusalem. From the Patriarchs to the Romans to the founding of Israel, if it happened in Jerusalem, it is probably in this book.

a pleasure to use
Jerusalem is a city of such intricacy and layers of meaning that it can only be appreciated on foot, but it is so complex that you could walk around on your own forever wihtout really seeing it . Rosovsky takes you by the hand and shows you the courtyards, the buildings made out of pieces of other buildings, the ordinary-looking spots where history happened. Of course, Jerusalem is a prosperous city and the constant construction sometimes throws a wall across your path. Don't let that stop you, just circumvent the obstacle and pick up the tour at the next point of interest.

Kicking Up Trouble: Upland Bird Hunting in the West
Published in Hardcover by Wilderness Adventures Press (August, 1900)
Authors: John Holt and Christopher S. Smith
Average review score:

Very Well Done
Mr. Holt has done a wonderful job in describing some of the more esoteric, and personal, aspects of bird hunting. He also has done a good job of giving the reader an understanding of the land and people of Montana. I read this book a few years ago, and will be sending it to more bird-hunting friends this Christmas Whether you are a bird hunter, an admirer of Montana, or a Gonzo outdoorsman, you will enjoy this book.

Excellent taste of western upland bird hunting.
I bought this book 4 years ago when I found out I was moving from VA to Colorado. The author has a wonderful flair for description that rings true to me as a lifelong bird hunter. Unfortunately, the wonderful hunting he describes doesn't happen in Colorado, so it is one of those great books about dream hunts outside my local stomping grounds.

Lament for a Lost Lover
Published in Paperback by Fawcett Books (May, 1985)
Authors: Phillipa Carr, Victoria Holt, Jean Plaidy, and Philippa Carr
Average review score:

The saga continues.....
This is Arabella's story, and I think I enjoyed it only a little less than that of Bersaba and Angelet. (I like to hear two sides of a story.) I found Arabella a little dull, but I liked Harriet. :) Arabella seemed to lack the fire of her mother, Bersaba. All in all, this was a good book, but I figured out the ending wayy before I was finished.

Continuation of saga that began with Miracle at St. Bruno's
An exciting look at England during Cromwell's reign and after the triumphant return of Charles II. We are introduced to the adult Arabella, to Carlton, and to the irrepressible Harriet whose lives all continue in "The Love Child," "Song of the Siren," and "Will You Love Me In September." There is a little bit of everything in "Lament for A Lost Lover" - history, romance, and mystery. The reader can connect with the characters, share in the intrigue, feel their pain and rejoice at their happiness. The characters become friends who you will want to visit again and again. It is a book that can be enjoyed by itself or as part of the series that began with "Miracle at St. Bruno's."
